LIVING ROOM DÉCOR WITH AIR PURIFYING PLANTS
LIVING ROOM DÉCOR WITH AIR PURIFYING PLANTS
Before the eighties plants were relegated to home gardens or plant nurseries. It was during the late eighties that the NASA Clean Air Study project stated plants could help in reducing both outdoor and indoor pollution. They specified a few indoor plants which could help in reducing air pollution by removing the toxins present in our homes. This study has brought about a paradigm shift in the mindset of people. Now, these plants adorn our homes and offices.
Along with cleaning the air, these air-purifying plants help in reducing stress, increase oxygen levels, reduce carbon dioxide and airborne dust, increase humidity and lower indoor air temperatures. Both the principles of Feng Shui and Vastu believe these plants help in enhancing the positive energy and bringing good luck in the house.
Toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, ammonia which are released by carpet, upholstery, furnishings, paints, cleaning- products which are linked to adverse health conditions are easily removed from our homes by keeping these air-purifying plants.
I am sharing details of a few plants which can survive in minimal light, have good height to make your living room nice and bright.
Areca palm- is also called as butterfly palm, golden cane palm, bamboo palm, scientific name-Dypsis lutescens. They can grow up to 6-7 ft.
These can be easily kept in the living room as they do not need direct sunlight. They look elegant when placed in the living room. They are slow-growing plants and can remain at living room height for many years. Palms are one of the few plants that grow well in small containers. They need soil-based potting compost and shouldn’t be re-potted unnecessarily. It needs a large amount of water during growth but less during winter. The leaves are non-toxic to pets. These palms eliminate benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, xylene etc
Rubber Plants-( Ficus elastica)- they are evergreen, tough plants with glossy green leaves. They don’t require direct sunlight and grow well indoors. They can easily be grown in small pots to restrict their growth to keep them small. A sunny spot in the living room is perfect for them. The soil should be well-drained. It requires a humid and moist environment.
They remove carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, trichloroethane from the environment and help to keep the home clean and fresh.
Snake Plant (Sansevieria rifasciata) Also known as the mother-in-law’s tongue or viper’s bowstring. It removes up to 107 known air pollutants including chloroform, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, xylene, benzene, nitrogen monoxide and trichloroethylene, to name a few.
This is a tough and hardy plant which can be easily kept in the living room as a tabletop. This requires low indirect light and little watering. This is one plant which converts carbon dioxide to oxygen at night while other plants do it only in the day. It is a low- maintenance plant which gives a lush feel to the room.
